Symbiotic Nexus Protocol: Candidate Design¶
Status: exploratory architecture. The protocol has not been validated in deployment, and its decentralization and veto choices are not mathematical necessities.
Objective¶
Design a socio-technical system in which AI-supported coordination remains answerable to human and ecological conditions. The protocol combines local authority, limited cross-system coordination, vital-variable monitoring, independent challenge, and repair.
1. Vital-variable layer¶
High-impact proposals are evaluated against declared variables such as service access, mental and physical workload, food or housing security, ecological damage, and recovery capacity.
A threshold crossing can slow, limit, or stop an action. The threshold must expose:
- measurement uncertainty and delay;
- who selected the variable;
- who can invoke or override the veto;
- what happens after a false alarm;
- whether harm is displaced outside the measured boundary.
The system should compare predicted impacts with observed outcomes and revise its model.
2. Distributed evidence and authority¶
No single model should be the sole judge of its own effects. Local participants can supply context and retain authority over locally borne risks, while shared institutions may be needed for cross-boundary harms.
The design does not grant every local node “absolute truth.” Claims should travel with provenance, uncertainty, access rules, and a route for independent verification.
Decentralization can reduce some single points of failure and create others. The topology must be tested against the relevant threat model.
3. Protected unmodeled space¶
People should retain activities, relationships, and choices that are not optimized simply because they can be measured. Privacy, silence, refusal, and unquantified experience can be protected as rights and design constraints.
This is a normative governance decision, not a consequence of Gödel's incompleteness theorems. Incompleteness does not mathematically require a “human gap.”
4. Independent challenge¶
Consequential proposals should include:
- assumptions and omitted variables;
- a plausible failure or dissent scenario;
- affected-party review;
- an independent evaluator where feasible;
- a reversible first step;
- a repair plan.
Doubt should not automatically outrank evidence, and mandatory counterarguments can become ritual paperwork. The test is whether challenge changes decisions and reduces held-out failures.
5. Evaluation¶
Compare the protocol with centralized and simpler baselines under matched resources. Measure:
- vital-floor violations;
- beneficial actions blocked;
- detection and response delay;
- review burden;
- veto capture or bypass;
- recovery after error;
- distribution of authority and cost.
Current claim¶
AI-supported coordination should preserve local knowledge, independent verification, protected refusal, and enforceable vital conditions without treating any component as infallible.
