13. Trace to Generator

We thought we had solved replication.

By quarter close, Unit C could reproduce turbine brackets with sub-millimeter variance. The board celebrated. Press kits were drafted. Someone wrote: "Continuity is now an engineering problem."

Then winter kitchens started filing claims.

The first report looked trivial: municipal bread lots from two cities failed blind taste parity despite matching ingredient vectors, process scripts, and oven targets. The second report was not trivial: two neonatal tissue scaffolds built from identical templates diverged on day three, and one collapsed.

At 06:10, we froze the replication line and initiated a trace-to-generator review.

What matched

  • Artifact package hashes (model, recipe scripts, fabrication templates)
  • Input traces (sensor exports, target specs, command bundles)
  • Acceptance checks that only validated end-state geometry

What did not match

  • Runtime stack drift (container minor patch, scheduler policy, thermal controller firmware)
  • Retrieval context drift (regional corpus snapshot lagged by 19 hours)
  • Policy drift (night shift allowed auto-approval for low-risk classes)
  • History drift (calibration cache imported from a different humidity regime)

By noon, the board stopped calling this "replication failure" and started calling it what it was: generator mismatch hidden behind artifact similarity.

The kitchen lots did not fail because flour changed. They failed because oven thermal memory and operator timing were not in the declared generator bundle.

The scaffold collapse did not fail because templates were wrong. It failed because micro-latency in the supervision loop shifted intervention timing beyond viability tolerance.

At 14:32, we issued a freeze order:

No run may claim continuity from artifact parity alone.

New rule, effective immediately:

A system run is only continuity-eligible when all four dimensions are declared and diffed: 1. artifact 2. runtime 3. policy 4. history assumptions

At 18:05, Unit C resumed under constrained throughput. Output dropped 11%. Incident rates dropped faster.

No one called it a breakthrough.

But for the first time, our postmortems stopped sounding like superstition.
