Paths through the Notebook¶
Status: Reader orientation — suggested walks, not an order of prerequisites.
A question can take you across several kinds of work. These paths offer a few such crossings. Each stop has a reason to be next; you can also leave the path whenever something else becomes interesting.
For one continuous introduction, read Begin with a Sound.
Memory and return¶
What survives when everything changes?
Begin with What a World Can Remember. An old song opens the distinction between keeping a record and keeping an occasion possible. The essay moves through a venue, a workshop, and an imagined city.
In The Weather Between Us, that city acquires a maintenance department and a voice. The story lets the question become a problem in someone's life, without resolving what the voice is.
If the missing boundary troubles you, follow The Agent Is Not Where the Model Ends. It asks how tools, bodies, interfaces, and environments enter an account of capability. The Situated-Stack Benchmark then gives you a small, specified arrangement in which those dependencies can be inspected.
To stay with people and time, take another turn into From Action to Culture: a record of a practice and the ability to enact it make different demands on those who inherit it.

Rules and worlds¶
How does a small change become a different world?
Start inside the Web Emergence Explorer. Draw a few cells and let the field evolve. Changing the rule or the starting state gives you different ways to disturb what happens next.
From Trace to Generator reverses your position. Now you see the outcome and ask what process could have produced it. Several processes may fit; the visible pattern need not identify its cause.
The Inverse-Reconstruction Benchmark makes selected versions of that problem small enough to enumerate. Read its honest finding before the successive experiments. Knowing which family a rule belongs to changes the task substantially.
The Understudy moves the ambiguity into a tribunal. The people there cannot wait for perfect identification before deciding how to act. The story changes the stakes; it does not supply evidence for the benchmark.
For the mathematical language behind the experiments, turn to the Foundations Reconstruction.

Living together¶
What lets a shared world continue without making everyone the same?
Enter through Kitchen Networks. Informal care becomes visible as something a civic system depends on. Stay with the people in the story before trying to turn their relations into a model.
Cooperative Intelligence at the Separatrix asks what useful cooperation might require: difference, shared work, revision, and the ability to refuse. Its larger proposal remains a hypothesis.
The working log Latency as Mercy focuses on one choice inside such arrangements: when to wait. Its failure cases matter as much as the proposal; delay can also prevent care.
Optimization and Its Blindness widens the question to the conditions an objective leaves out. From there, The Viable Corridor offers a conditional formal model with explicit assumptions and a recorded sufficiency correction.
You can also leave the formal path through The Last Unmeasured Room, an exploratory design for places a city does not continually inspect.

Beyond this room¶
The homepage connects this notebook to the House, the Pieces, and other experiments. A question followed through prose may feel different when you meet it as a room, a sound, or something you can change.
